---
Aloha Friends of the Flying Disc!
While playing league, have you ever caught the disc, only to turn up field and see 3 defenders swarming you like rabid coyotes? Have you ever thrown a disc to a wide-open receiver, only to see some defender fly out of the nether regions of the field to get a D? Have you ever been trying to complete a pass when everyone is screaming "ZONE!" and trying to get you to throw the disc to them?
If so, you're not alone. Pretty much everyone that has played against Jess or Don's teams the last two leagues has experienced this exact phenomenon. It's the zone defense baby, and it's high time that we blow the lid of the zone mystery for everyone in the HULA community.
Shugga, the sweetest named team in Hawai'i, will be hosting a series of Sunday Zone clinics in April to introduce the basic ideas of zone and some tricky variations. Each session will be 2 hours, and will likely be immediately followed by Party Van sponsored scrimmages.
On April 11th, we'll begin the clinic with an in-depth discussion of the importance of communication in zone defense and the basic responsibilities of each defensive position. We'll drill the skills needed to run (no seriously, run) an effective cup, and to play an effective wing containment.
On April 18th, we'll discuss and drill one or two variations of a trap zone, which attempts to position the offense on the sideline and keep them there.
After reevaluating the progress of the clinics, we'll conclude with yet trickier variations of the zone (4 person trap? 1:3:3? Clam?) on April 25th.
Each session will run 2 hours starting at 10:00am. These clinics are open to anyone and everyone, at every skill level, and at any age. We only ask that you come ready to have fun while pushing the limits of your Ultimate abilities... which is kinda the Shugga way.
Speaking of the Shugga way, keep your ears perked for news of Shugga's open practices starting in May and running up to Potlatch in early July. These practices will stress fundamentals and individual skills, and will be open to EVERYONE! Details to follow soon.
Cheers!
Shugga
